The Sakurao Brewery and Distillery Co. was founded in 1918 in the coastal town of Sakurao, Hiroshima. Originally named Chugoku Jozo, they were famed for their Sake production but at the same time were experimenting with single malt whisky. However, like many Japanese distilleries in the 20th century this wasn’t a success, so the company abandoned the practise. It wasn’t until the introduction of new labelling standards to the Japanese whisky industry that Sakurao decided to try again. They released their first malts in 2022.
